El Resumen del Capítulo

 

Antonio conversa con sus hijos y les dice que él tiene un amante, Julieta Vargas. Él explica como se conocieron. Vivi no le cree. Ella lo acusa de ser un mujeriego. Ella se va muy enojada y le dice que no lo quiere ver más nunca. Ella se encuentra con Johnny. Él la quiere animar. Ella no necesita nada pero le pide el amor. Johnny se pone muy contento.

 

Mientras tanto, Gregória quiere atender a su hijo Elvis. Elvis está destruido porque Julieta no se quiere casar con él. Gregória entra en su cuarto y aparta la sábana y Elvis no está ahí. Ella solamente encuentra almohadas con figura de un hombre. Elvis está en una noria al punto de suicidarse cuando llegan sus primos para salvarlo. Wisan le dice que Julieta y Anonio (“el hombre rico”) son amantes. Elvis de momento rechasa su depresión y está listo para una pelea. El dice “Nadie se mete con Elvis Ramón Rosales. Él … va a saber quien es el gallo que más canta.”

 

Mientras tanto, Vivi y Johnny se encuentran solos en un cuarto privado. El cuarto no le gusta a Vivi. La decoración es muy barata. Johnny le pregunta si ella esta segura. Ella dice que sí ellos se besan. Ellos empiezan a desnudarse.

 

Antonio y Julieta siguen a pelear sobre la separación, Julieta, y los hijos. Beto y Azu están de compra por la ciudad. Beto recibe un text de Vivi diciendole que ella se acostó con Johnny. Catalina jura sola que ella va acabar con Antonio. Julieta y Paco hablan. Julieta quiere su propio espacio, pero de momento entra Elena y anuncia que ella se va de la casa,.

Those Pesky Accents

Today we review accents associated with verbs and the pronouns that get attached to the end of them. It seems that accents appear and disappear at will without rhyme or reason. Well, as you might guess, there is rhyme and reason.  Before proceeding, please review Lesson 37: Acentos. There we learned about the two most important rules in emphasizing syllables in Spanish and when an accent mark is or is not needed.

1.     Emphasize the 2^nd to last syllable when the word ends in a vowel, “-n,” or “-s.” Otherwise

2.     Emphasize the last syllable

[Note: accents are not needed in these two cases because they represent the “default” situation. The accent mark is automatically assumed.]

If a word deviates from these default rules, then it must contain an accent over the emphasized syllable.  Remember also that the accent goes over the vowel of the accented syllable.  For example: 

·      las albóndigas (meat balls); emphasis is on the third to last syllable, therefore an accent is needed over the “o.”

·      el capítulo (the chapter); emphasis is on the third to last syllable, therefore an accent is needed over the “i.”

·      la exploción (the explosion); emphasis is on the last syllable, but ordinarily it would be on the 2^nd to last syllable so an accent is needed over the “o” in the last syllable

 

In the course of conjugating verbs and adding pronouns  to the ends of infinitive verbs, the accented syllable remains the same whether there are trailing pronouns or not.

Comes                You eat                     Cómetelo      You eat it

Here the emphasis in “come” is already on the 2^nd to last syllable, so no accent is needed. However, when you add pronouns to the ends of verbs (e.g. infinitives or commands) the emphasis pattern on the verb doesn’t change, but because the verb is no longer the second to

last syllable, an accent is needed over the  first “o”

 

The opposite occurs with the verb “estar”

Tú estás              (You are)                  The emphasis is on the last syllable, so an accent over the “a” is needed. But

Estate tranquilo   (Be still)      The trailing pronoun “-te” makes the exmphasized syllable 2^nd to last in the sentence, so no accented is needed.

1.     Julieta y Elvis (con Paco,  y mujer desconocida) (V) – Elvis announces that they will marry in 5 days. Paco needs a new suit; which Elvis offers to buy. Julieta is surprised but she says she’s the happiest woman in the world. (Soy la mujer más felíz del mundo) although her body language does not align with her words.

2.     Antonio y Catalina (M) They discuss selling the house and dividing the proceeds, as well as disposing of an apartment they also own jointly. Antonio is shocked at what Catalina has become: a witch inside (una bruja por dentro). Antonio doesn’t care what she does and doesn’t want any money. He just wants to be left in peace (Déjame en paz)

3.     Julieta y Antonio. (G) Antonio texts Julieta and informs her that the police recovered his car. He’s surprised to hear she’s marrying in 5 days when previously it was one month away. He jokingly asks Julieta where is the wedding taking place so he can be nearby in case she flees the altar once again. They say their goodbyes, which now seem more permanent than ever.

4.     Mateo y Leticia y mujer desconocida (V) Mateo is with an unknown women and she brings food for Mateo to try. The interaction is very flirtacious and Leticia enters and is enraged to see them flirting.

5.     Gregória y esposa de Paco (M) Paco flirts with Gregoria via text. He wants to walk down the aisle with Gregoria at her side. Gregoria calls his wife, who answer “quién habla?” (Who’s speaking) and she replies Tu peor pesadilla (Your worst nightmare).  she doesn’t have time to speak with Gregoria.

6.     Julieta y Elena (y después Elvis) (G) They discuss the upcoming wedding. Elena says “Tú no te puedes casar con Elvis” as Elvis enters the room. They argue.

7.     Eduardo y Javi (V) They are performing their weekly chores. Javi is cleaning toilets and Lalo is ironing and burning the clothes. They are clearly not meant to perform manual labor.

8.     Fabián y Madona y Javi (M) They receive a group text message about a group planning their first meeting. Quién pone su casa para la primera junta?) Who volunteers their house for the first meeting?)   Madona doesn’t agree with the location (Estúpido, yo loca voy a tu casa).

9.     Gregória y Esposa de Paco (G) they decide to team up and plan to discover whom in fact Paco loves. Gregória agrees with the plan.

10.  Julieta y Elvis (V) Julieta wants the opposite of what Elvis wants in a wedding. She wants it small, intimate, not rushed. Elvis is the opposite. Julieta’s unhappiness is written on her face, but Elvis doesn’t listen to her.

11.  Beto y Antonio (M) Small talk devolves into a discussion about Beto’s falling out with Eduardo. Antonio doesn’t know anything about it and presses Beto, who says his friendship with Eduardo is over after he found Eduardo stealing money from the cashier at the restaurant. (Lo cogí robando dinero de la caja). Antonio is shocked.
