Lección 69: Un Poquito Tuyo Capítulo 13
Two important topics emerged last week: the subjunctive and phrases with “por” Like “por favor”(please) and “por supuesto” (of course)
The Subjunctive Present Tense
I refer you to Lessons 14 and 15. It is used for actions in the present that exist only in the mind of the speaker. English has a very small subjunctive: “I am king” (present), If I were king” In English, the subjunctive is triggered by “if” or “I wish that… “ “I hope that…” “I think that….” and often the word “would”or “should” or “might” is included as a helping verb: for example: You are a teacher. vs. If you were a teacher. Or “I wish you would be a teacher.”
Spanish is the same….it’s often triggered by “si”(if) or the word “que” for example: Tú eres maestra / You are a teacher. Yo quiero que tú seas maestra/I want you to be a teacher. The subjunctive is used a lot. Listen for it but don’t try to use it a lot right now as your efforts should be to master the present and the past.
Using “por”
Por is a preposition that has no easy English translation. Depending on the setting it can mean by, because of, for, through, times (mathematics), for each, about to, and many others. There are rules that describe when to use it, but it’s easier to learn canned phrases when it’s commonly used. Here are some:
por favor please por qué why
por supuesto of course por lo tanto therefore
por eso that’s why por fin finally
por lo menos at least por la tarde in the afternoon
por la mañana in the morning por la noche in the evening/at night
por lo que so por otro lado on the other hand
por lo general generally por si acaso just in case
por suerte luckily por un lado on the one hand
por nada for nothing por casualidad coincidentally
