Lección 70: Negative Commands, Un Poquito Tuyo Capítulo 14
Two important topics emerged last week: the subjunctive and phrases with “por” Like “por favor”(please) and “por supuesto” (of course)
Negative (friendly) Commands
Today we review commands you might give to individuals that you know, i.e. you address them with “tú” (you/familiar/singular). For regular verbs, you know the rule: you take the tú form of the verb and drop the “s” (which is the same as the third person singular form), e.g.
Tú hablas rápido. (you speak fast.). Habla más despacio. (Speak more slowly.)
Tú comes arroz? (Do you eat rice?). Come un poco más. (Eat some more.)
Tú subes las escaleras (subir=to go up; You go up the stairs) Sube las escaleras. Go up the stairs.
If there are pronouns, they go at the end of the verb:
Hablale (speak to him). Sientate (sit down). Dime (tell me), Dame (give me), Damelo (give it to me)
Negative commands are altogether different. If the verb ends in an “-a” you change the ending to “-es” and if the verb ends in an “-e” you change the ending to “-as” . This “flip-flop”of vowels is typical of the subjunctive case. E.g.
Come (eat) No comas (don’t eat) Habla (speak) No hables (don’t speak). Sube (go up) No subas (don’t go up). If there are pronouns, they go before the verb. E.g.
Hablale / No le hables. Sientate / No te sientes Súbete / No te subas
Remember these apply only to regular verbs. The irregular verbs you just have to memorize. E.g.
Dime / No me digas Dame / No me des Vete (go away) / No te vayas
Practice the positive and negative commands for these verbs:
1. Scare him / Don’t scare him (asustar). Asústalo / No lo asustes
2. Turn off the light / Don’t …. (apagar; la luz)
3. Look for him / Don’t…. (buscar)
4. Calm down. (calmar)
5. Buy it. (comprar)
6. Cut it. (cortar)
7. Take care of yourself (cuidar)
8. Decide. (decidir)
9. Take a rest (descansar)
10. Return it (devolver)
11. Sleep (dormir)
12. Write to him (escribir)
13. Wait for me (esperar)

Largate. Quiero estar sola. (largar – to leave; similar to irse, but stronger, often conveys that one is no longer welcome.

Yo tengo que decirle la verdad. (a Julieta)
No puedo verle la cara si no le digo la verdad.
Dame 24 horas para hablar con ella, por favor.
5. Eduardo y Antonio (Madeliene)
Los Milagros sí existen.
Tuve que presionar a Azu un poco pero… me suelta la sopa (spilled the beans)
Sí estoy contento, pero yo ya lo sabia.
6. Elena y Elton y despues Julieta (Greg)
Paco y yo decidimos adoptarnos mutualmente. Soy tu hermano.
Como hermanos, no Podemos tener secretos. Le voy a tener que decir la verdad a Julieta. Tú estas enamorada de Elvis.
7. Gregória y Paco y Elvis. (Vicky)
(Paco wants to marry Gregória). ¿Qué esta pasando aquí?
Quiero pedirte formalmente la mano de tu madre. (Gregoria Faints)
8. Catalina and the Surgeon (Madeliene)
¿Más dinero Cata. Qué hiciste con lo que yo
te dí.
Yo te doy más dinero, pero tú me llevas a ver la boutique.
9. Paco, Elvis, y Gregória (Greg)_
Llamo a una ambulancia.
Pero es que no sabia que se iba a desmayar (to faint)
10. Violeta, Azu, Eduardo (Vicky)
Uds me deben una. Eso no se pueden olvidar.

Me dás la mano de tu madre, sí o no?
Está bien, te doy la mano
Por eso me gusta esa mujer. Es más facil matar un burro a pelliscos.
12. Elton entra (Greg)
Le di 24 horas y media para decirle la verdad a Julieta. Si no, se la voy a decir yo.
